A quartet takes on one of William Byrd’s three mass settings, this for 4 voices. In Protestant England where being a practicing Catholic was against the law, these masses were performed predominantly in the basements and salons of private homes in England under threat of imprisonment or death. As such, their difficult interlocking lines are a testament to the one-on-a-part singing that likely featured as a part of the mass celebration.
