Mr. Beckemeyer joins the Bloomington Cantata Project for a performance of Bach's Cantata No. 75, "Die Elenden sollen essen," or "The Disenfranchised shall eat," with period orchestra, conducted by Mr. Stanley Ritchie with lecture by Dr. Melamed. The project's plan is to perform every Bach cantata over the course of its subsequent seasons. This performance marks the fiftieth cantata presented by this organization.
One-on-a-part is a theory by a large group of Historical Performance scholars that Bach, given the limited resources he had access to and the extant manuscripts, he probably performed some of his vocal works with a single singer to a part or with a solo quartet and a ripieno quartet, where the solo quartet sang both solo and ensemble material. BBCP uses this model, so I will sing the opening chorus, two recitatives, an aria, and two chorales.
The cantata was written as Bach's first in Leipzig as Thomaskantor. He was enthralled by the new trumpet player and wrote a bravura trumpet aria. The trumpeter also plays the chorale melody during the sinfonia of Part II and accompanies the bass in a difficult aria for both obbligato trumpet and bass voice.
