University Singers: The Year was 1918...

Betsy Burleigh's choice chorus focuses on the year 1918 with pieces or composers at their centenary. The concert will be a celebrating of the year 1918 when Bernstein was born and other composers passed away. The concert will open with pieces by Lili Boulanger, the sister of Nadia Boulanger, who tragically at age 24. The chorus will perform Soir Sur la Plaine and Hymn to the Sun, featuring IU students as the soloists. A celebration of 1918 would not be complete without Claude Debussy. The concert will feature Trois Chansons by Debussy which is based on a letter that Debussy wrote to his friend in 1908, in which he states, “Winter is a villain” giving way to the second song in the cycle, “Yver, vous n’estes qu’un villain”. The concert will commence in a celebration of Bernstein's 100th birthday with “French Choruses” from The Lark and various choruses from Candide.
